Why old photos fade
Color prints from the 1960s to the 1990s are made of three dye layers that break down at different speeds. When one goes first, the whole picture shifts: that's why so many family photos look red, orange or magenta.
Black-and-white prints fade more evenly but lose depth, so shadows turn gray and faces flatten. In both cases the print usually still holds more detail than the eye can see, and that's what the restoration works from.
